Art, Fact & Artifact: The Book in Time & Place
Brought to you by the Iowa Artisans Gallery
The Iowa Artisans Gallery brings to you new works by artist members of the College Book Art Association. This exhibit is being held in conjunction with the first biennial College Book Art Association conference hosted by the University of Iowa Center for the Book. The show runs until February 15, 2009. Curated by eminent artists and conservators, the exhibit brings together artists' book work from across the nation, ranging from democratic multiples, fine press editions and hand-printed broadsides to one-of-a-kind book objects. Interested in a book's touch and motion as well as its imagery and language, the artists on display understand the book as a sensory object, reaching viewers through eye, hand, and ear.
Art, Fact & Artifact includes pieces by established artists as well as new voices in the world of book art. Jurors were Karen Kunc (University of Nebraska), Chip Schilling (Indulgence Press), and Pamela Spitzmueller (Harvard University). Citing the conference's title Art, Fact, and Artifact: The Book in Time and Place, Matt Brown, director of the Center for the Book states that "the selections nicely illustrate the conference theme of books being both witnesses from the past and living presences with an aesthetic power." This show is one of six exhibitions arranged for conferees and the public.
