Jan Friedman: Embracing Nature, Framed Fiber Collage
Jan Friedman's exhibit is now over, but read on for details from when it was on display.
A well-known local fiber artist takes a walk, and here's what she finds. Friedman mixes handwoven, hand-dyed fabrics with found objects, a source of inspiration during forty years of weaving art pieces.
Iowa Artisans Gallery hosts Embracing Nature, Framed Fiber Collage, an exhibit of fiber art and tapestries by Iowa artist Jan Friedman, March 6 – April 12, 2015. The exhibit opens during the March 6 Gallery Walk, 5-8pm, at 16 locations in downtown Iowa City. The artist will be in attendance.
Fiber artist Jan Friedman has been weaving since 1974. Her tapestries incorporate hand-dyed wool, cotton, rayon and silk, contrasting flat areas of gradual color transitions with more textured regions of exuberant hue. A constant theme in all of her work is nature, with inspiration for her tapestries coming from sky, water, land and vegetation.
Friedman also creates fiber collages, which make up the bulk of this exhibition. In these, small textile fragments are combined with found objects. She comments, “natural treasures such as feathers, sticks, and stones, which I find on walks, are stored until they are needed in a specific collage. In contrast to the highly planned tapestries, I work intuitively at collages, bringing together and arranging those elements in order to make a piece whose soul and energy is greater than the sum of its parts.”
Friedman received her M.A. in Textile Design at the University of Iowa in 1980 and was a co-owner of the former Weaving Studio, a fiber art supply shop and studio now occupied by Deluxe Bakery. She has conducted workshops in weaving, color, and dyeing throughout the country. Her tapestries and framed collage pieces have been featured in numerous invitational and juried exhibits. Her commissioned work may be found in corporate and healthcare settings across Iowa, as well as nationally and in Japan.
