Popelka Glass Studio: Stephanie Trenchard & Jeremy Popelka
This nationally known artist couple has gained prominence among collectors for their sculptural cast glass works that have a storytelling focus.
Popelka Glass Studio is located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Contemporary glass is the result of highly complex, craft-based technique. Glass artists often collaborate to produce these labor-intensive works, as do Stephanie Trenchard and Jeremy Popelka for the works shown in this exhibit. Popelka focuses more on form, and Trenchard on the distinctive surface treatment.
A painter with interests in art history and women artists, Stephanie Trenchard comments, "The intellectual discourse of the time impacts the decorative and domestic arts of the period and often reflect the influence of women artists. This becomes a vehicle where I find a relationship between women and the process of making art. Like poetry, the pieces tell stories without narratives." Born in Illinois, she was educated at the Illinois State University and has participated in many national gallery and museum shows, including SOFA Chicago.
Jeremy Popelka's interest lies in sand-cast, constructed glass forms inspired by architectural, organic and geological influences. Rural farm architecture is his latest focus. "It has always been important to me to give my glasswork a dual personality, with its inherent attribute of transparency obscured by sand scarred surfaces." Popelka studied in Illinois, receiving his MFA from The California College of Arts and Crafts. His work has been featured in numerous shows and publications, including American Craft.
