Iowa Artisans Gallery presents Larry Welo as Painter: En Plein Air, through November 4, 2013. Known primarily as a printmaker, Welo recently turned his eye towards painting, usually on location or “en plein air.” This exhibition includes paintings of landscapes near his home and studio in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Welo will be honored during the Iowa City Gallery Walk, 5-8pm on Friday, October 11.
Welo has painted for some time, previously as a way to work out ideas for etchings. Encouraged by fellow artists to develop his paintings, he made a New Year’s Resolution in January 2012 to develop completed paintings, a resolution he’s kept. He continues to make prints as well.
With exceptional skill and witty insight, Welo has traditionally focused on limited edition etchings depicting landscape, sport or animal themes. While a printmaker, Welo started making etchings on location rather than just in the studio, by covering his metal etching plate with the usual asphaltum acid-resistant coating and using an etching needle to “draw” what he sees out in the field. By now, he uses additional methods for his plein air pieces, such as sugar lift, soft ground, drypoint or “Sharpie” resists. “The River,” his newest work, is an example of drawing on the plate using a “Sharpie” pen, which resists the acid. Welo varies his techniques to achieve different results, even in his plein air etchings.
A long-time gallery artist, Larry Welo’s work is included in the New York Public Library Print Department, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Library of Congress, The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Minnesota History Center, the New Orleans Museum of Art, The Joslyn Art Museum, the Des Moines Art Center and the Cedar Rapids Art Museum. Welo is a graduate of Luther College.
